“My initial reason for grabbing this old, neglected ’35 was because I thought it was perfect for sheet metal manufacturing samples, which meant this coupe would be cut into sections and totally sacrificed in order to gain body panel patterns. But, after listening to our crew and learning their desire to build a cool hot rod, I gave into the future vision of this aged survivor and changed my plan to getting it on the road. Now, the thought of destroying such a seasoned piece of history equals a crime to me. Hopefully, we’ll find a more suitable car for sacrifice, but this one’s too cool to kill. I give my sincere “thank you” to our entire staff for helping me see the light”

The Project '35 Begins

We carefully analyzed the ’35 as it sat on our handy “Backyard Buddy” lift system.
 body-off
The body was firmly stuck to the frame after decades of sitting lifeless.

It’s amazing how much work went into the original design and assembly of old Fords, but
pleasantly simple compared to modern Ford designs.

It’s bone-stock frame will now begin the transformation of gaining a whole new look with a powder coat finish and updated suspension components.

This car has many character marks from age in which we’ll keep, including some beautifully aged windows.

Big John and Rich carefully separate the body from the frame.

All unusable original equipment being removed is tagged and entered into the Drake archives for future study.

It’s hard to imagine this baby was once brand new, proudly sitting on a showroom floor.

The empty shell is amazingly complete, less seat and upholstery, leaving plenty of
room for the imagination.

All removed nuts, bolts and
washers are each tagged and
saved from this remarkable
“all-original” specimen.		 rear end assembly
Although the rear end assembly
will be completely replaced, it’s condition is noted before archiving. This one’s still full of Ford lube and turns like new.
Rich measures the original top opening for designing a cool retractable panel, as skyward vision will be a huge plus in tracking UFOs and police aircraft.
